GeForce GTX 275 vs GeForce GTX 550 Ti

Intro

The GeForce GTX 275 has core speeds of 633 MHz on the GPU, and 1134 MHz on the 896 MB of GDDR3 RAM. It features 240 SPUs as well as 80 TAUs and 28 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the GeForce GTX 550 Ti, which comes with a core clock speed of 900 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1026 MHz. It also uses a 192-bit bus, and makes use of a 40 nm design. It is comprised of 192 SPUs, 32 Texture Address Units, and 24 Raster Operation Units.

GeForce GTX 275 219 Watts
Difference: 103 Watts (89%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the GeForce GTX 275 should in theory be much better than the GeForce GTX 550 Ti overall. (explain)

GeForce GTX 275 127008 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 550 Ti 98496 MB/sec
Difference: 28512 (29%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 275 should be a lot (approximately 76%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the GeForce GTX 550 Ti. (explain)

GeForce GTX 275 50640 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 550 Ti 28800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 21840 (76%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 550 Ti should be much (more or less 22%) better at anti-aliasing than the GeForce GTX 275, and also will be able to handle higher resolutions more effectively. (explain)

GeForce GTX 550 Ti 21600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 275 17724 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3876 (22%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
