GeForce GTX 275 vs GeForce GTX 550 Ti

Intro

The GeForce GTX 275 makes use of a 55 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 633 MHz. The GDDR3 memory is set to run at a frequency of 1134 MHz on this specific card. It features 240 SPUs as well as 80 TAUs and 28 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the GeForce GTX 550 Ti, which uses a 40 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core frequency at 900 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM works at a frequency of 1026 MHz on this particular model. It features 192 SPUs as well as 32 Texture Address Units and 24 Rasterization Operator Units.

GeForce GTX 275 219 Watts
Difference: 103 Watts (89%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the GeForce GTX 275 should theoretically be quite a bit better than the GeForce GTX 550 Ti in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 275 127008 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 550 Ti 98496 MB/sec
Difference: 28512 (29%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 275 should be quite a bit (about 76%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the GeForce GTX 550 Ti. (explain)

GeForce GTX 275 50640 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 550 Ti 28800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 21840 (76%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 550 Ti is a lot (about 22%) faster with regards to AA than the GeForce GTX 275, and also will be capable of handling higher screen resolutions better. (explain)

GeForce GTX 550 Ti 21600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 275 17724 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3876 (22%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card could possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
