GeForce GTS 150 vs GeForce GTX 580

Intro

The GeForce GTS 150 comes with a GPU core speed of 740 MHz, and the 1024 MB of GDDR3 RAM runs at 500 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is made up of 128 Stream Processors, 64 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the GeForce GTX 580, which uses a 40 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core frequency at 772 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM runs at a speed of 1002 MHz on this model. It features 512 SPUs as well as 64 Texture Address Units and 48 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTS 150 141 Watts
GeForce GTX 580 244 Watts
Difference: 103 Watts (73%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the GeForce GTX 580 should theoretically be much better than the GeForce GTS 150 in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 580 192384 MB/sec
GeForce GTS 150 32000 MB/sec
Difference: 160384 (501%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 580 should be a bit (approximately 4%) more effective at AF than the GeForce GTS 150. (explain)

GeForce GTX 580 49408 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTS 150 47360 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 2048 (4%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 580 is superior to the GeForce GTS 150, by far. (explain)

GeForce GTX 580 37056 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTS 150 11840 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 25216 (213%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in a second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
