GeForce GTS 250 512MB vs GeForce GTX 570

Intro

The GeForce GTS 250 512MB features a GPU core clock speed of 738 MHz, and the 512 MB of GDDR3 memory runs at 1100 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is made up of 128 SPUs, 64 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the GeForce GTX 570, which comes with a GPU core clock speed of 732 MHz, and 1280 MB of GDDR5 RAM set to run at 950 MHz through a 320-bit bus. It also is comprised of 480 Stream Processors, 60 TAUs, and 40 ROPs.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card could possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
