GeForce GTX 950M vs Radeon RX 470 4GB

Intro

The GeForce GTX 950M features a GPU clock speed of 914 MHz, and the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM is set to run at 1000 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 640 Stream Processors, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 470 4GB, which has core speeds of 926 MHz on the GPU, and 1650 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 2048 SPUs along with 128 TAUs and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

GeForce GTX 950M 55 Watts
Radeon RX 470 4GB 120 Watts
Difference: 65 Watts (118%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon RX 470 4GB should in theory be much superior to the GeForce GTX 950M in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 470 4GB 211200 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 950M 32000 MB/sec
Difference: 179200 (560%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 470 4GB should be quite a bit (more or less 224%) faster with regards to AF than the GeForce GTX 950M. (explain)

Radeon RX 470 4GB 118528 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 950M 36560 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 81968 (224%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 470 4GB is superior to the GeForce GTX 950M, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon RX 470 4GB 29632 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 950M 14624 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 15008 (103%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface within a second. It's worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card can possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
