GeForce 8800 GTX vs Radeon HD 6450 (OEM)

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GTX has a GPU core speed of 575 MHz, and the 768 MB of GDDR3 RAM runs at 900 MHz through a 384-bit bus. It also features 128 SPUs, 64 Texture Address Units, and 24 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM), which has GPU clock speed of 625 MHz, and 512 MB of GDDR3 RAM set to run at 800 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is made up of 160 Stream Processors, 8 TAUs, and 4 Raster Operation Units.

GeForce 8800 GTX 155 Watts
Difference: 124 Watts (400%)

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce 8800 GTX should in theory perform quite a bit faster than the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) overall. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GTX 86400 MB/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 73600 (575%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 8800 GTX will be much (about 636%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM). (explain)

GeForce 8800 GTX 36800 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 5000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 31800 (636%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce 8800 GTX is quite a bit (approximately 452%) better at AA than the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM), and will be able to handle higher screen resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GTX 13800 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 2500 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 11300 (452%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
