GeForce RTX 4090 vs Radeon RX 6600

Intro

The GeForce RTX 4090 has a clock frequency of 2235 MHz and a GDDR6X memory speed of 1325 MHz. It also features a 384-bit bus, and uses a 4 nm design. It is made up of 16384 SPUs, 512 TAUs, and 176 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 6600, which makes use of a 7 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 1626 MHz. The GDDR6 memory runs at a frequency of 1750 MHz on this specific model. It features 1792 SPUs as well as 112 Texture Address Units and 64 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon RX 6600 132 Watts
GeForce RTX 4090 450 Watts
Difference: 318 Watts (241%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce RTX 4090 will be 354% faster than the Radeon RX 6600 in general, due to its higher bandwidth. (explain)

GeForce RTX 4090 1042432 MB/sec
Radeon RX 6600 229376 MB/sec
Difference: 813056 (354%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 4090 should be quite a bit (more or less 528%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon RX 6600. (explain)

GeForce RTX 4090 1144320 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 6600 182112 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 962208 (528%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce RTX 4090 is the winner, by far. (explain)

GeForce RTX 4090 393360 Mpixels/sec
Radeon RX 6600 104064 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 289296 (278%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
