GeForce GTX 580 vs Radeon HD 5570

Intro

The GeForce GTX 580 comes with core clock speeds of 772 MHz on the GPU, and 1002 MHz on the 1536 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 512 SPUs as well as 64 TAUs and 48 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 5570, which comes with core clock speeds of 650 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 512 MB of DDR3 memory. It features 400(80x5) SPUs along with 20 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Radeon HD 5570 43 Watts
GeForce GTX 580 244 Watts
Difference: 201 Watts (467%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the GeForce GTX 580 should theoretically be quite a bit better than the Radeon HD 5570 overall. (explain)

GeForce GTX 580 192384 MB/sec
Radeon HD 5570 28800 MB/sec
Difference: 163584 (568%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 580 should be a lot (approximately 280%) better at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 5570. (explain)

GeForce GTX 580 49408 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5570 13000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 36408 (280%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 580 is a better choice, by far. (explain)

GeForce GTX 580 37056 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5570 5200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 31856 (613%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card can possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
