GeForce GTX 570 vs Radeon HD 6870

Intro

The GeForce GTX 570 comes with a core clock frequency of 732 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 950 MHz. It also makes use of a 320-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 40 nm design. It is comprised of 480 SPUs, 60 Texture Address Units, and 40 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 6870, which features core speeds of 900 MHz on the GPU, and 1050 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 1120 SPUs as well as 56 Texture Address Units and 32 ROPs.

In theory, the GeForce GTX 570 is 13% faster than the Radeon HD 6870 overall, because of its higher data rate. (explain)

GeForce GTX 570 152000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 6870 134400 MB/sec
Difference: 17600 (13%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6870 is just a bit (approximately 15%) better at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GTX 570. (explain)

Radeon HD 6870 50400 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 570 43920 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 6480 (15%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 570 will be just a bit (about 2%) better at AA than the Radeon HD 6870, and also able to handle higher resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

GeForce GTX 570 29280 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6870 28800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 480 (2%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
