GeForce GTS 150 vs GeForce GTX 460 1GB

Intro

The GeForce GTS 150 features core speeds of 740 MHz on the GPU, and 500 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR3 memory. It features 128 SPUs as well as 64 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare that to the GeForce GTX 460 1GB, which has a GPU core clock speed of 675 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM running at 900 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is made up of 336 Stream Processors, 56 Texture Address Units, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

GeForce GTX 460 1GB 160 Watts
Difference: 19 Watts (13%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the GeForce GTX 460 1GB should in theory be much superior to the GeForce GTS 150 overall. (explain)

GeForce GTX 460 1GB 115200 MB/sec
GeForce GTS 150 32000 MB/sec
Difference: 83200 (260%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTS 150 will be much (about 25%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the GeForce GTX 460 1GB. (explain)

GeForce GTS 150 47360 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 460 1GB 37800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 9560 (25%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 460 1GB is a better choice, by far. (explain)

GeForce GTX 460 1GB 21600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTS 150 11840 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 9760 (82%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
