GeForce GTS 450 1GB vs GeForce GTX 260

Intro

The GeForce GTS 450 1GB features a GPU clock speed of 783 MHz, and the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory runs at 902 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 192 Stream Processors, 32 Texture Address Units, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the GeForce GTX 260, which comes with core speeds of 576 MHz on the GPU, and 999 MHz on the 896 MB of GDDR3 memory. It features 192 SPUs along with 64 TAUs and 28 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTS 450 1GB 106 Watts
GeForce GTX 260 182 Watts
Difference: 76 Watts (72%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the GeForce GTX 260 should in theory be much superior to the GeForce GTS 450 1GB in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 260 111888 MB/sec
GeForce GTS 450 1GB 57728 MB/sec
Difference: 54160 (94%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 260 should be much (more or less 47%) more effective at texture filtering than the GeForce GTS 450 1GB. (explain)

GeForce GTX 260 36864 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTS 450 1GB 25056 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 11808 (47%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 260 should be quite a bit (about 29%) faster with regards to anti-aliasing than the GeForce GTS 450 1GB, and also able to handle higher screen resolutions better. (explain)

GeForce GTX 260 16128 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTS 450 1GB 12528 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3600 (29%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
