GeForce GTS 450 1GB vs Radeon HD 5450

Intro

The GeForce GTS 450 1GB features a core clock frequency of 783 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 902 MHz. It also uses a 128-bit bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It is made up of 192 SPUs, 32 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 5450, which comes with a core clock speed of 650 MHz and a DDR3 memory frequency of 800 MHz. It also uses a 64-bit bus, and makes use of a 40 nm design. It is made up of 80(16x5) SPUs, 8 Texture Address Units, and 4 Raster Operation Units.

Radeon HD 5450 19 Watts
GeForce GTS 450 1GB 106 Watts
Difference: 87 Watts (458%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce GTS 450 1GB should perform a lot faster than the Radeon HD 5450 overall. (explain)

GeForce GTS 450 1GB 57728 MB/sec
Radeon HD 5450 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 44928 (351%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTS 450 1GB is a lot (more or less 382%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 5450. (explain)

GeForce GTS 450 1GB 25056 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5450 5200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 19856 (382%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the GeForce GTS 450 1GB is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

GeForce GTS 450 1GB 12528 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5450 2600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 9928 (382%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in a second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
