GeForce GTS 450 vs Radeon HD 6770

Intro

The GeForce GTS 450 has a GPU clock speed of 783 MHz, and the 512 MB of GDDR5 memory runs at 902 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 192 SPUs, 32 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 6770, which has clock speeds of 900 MHz on the GPU, and 1050 MHz on the 512 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 800 SPUs as well as 40 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Benchmarks

These are real-world performance benchmarks that were submitted by Hardware Compare users. The scores seen here are the average of all benchmarks submitted for each respective test and hardware.

3DMark Fire Strike Graphics Score

Radeon HD 6770 1520 points
GeForce GTS 450 1453 points
Difference: 67 (5%)

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTS 450 106 Watts
Radeon HD 6770 108 Watts
Difference: 2 Watts (2%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon HD 6770 should theoretically be just a bit superior to the GeForce GTS 450 in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 6770 67200 MB/sec
GeForce GTS 450 57728 MB/sec
Difference: 9472 (16%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6770 should be a lot (more or less 44%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the GeForce GTS 450. (explain)

Radeon HD 6770 36000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTS 450 25056 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 10944 (44%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon HD 6770 is the winner, but only just. (explain)

Radeon HD 6770 14400 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTS 450 12528 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 1872 (15%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
