Radeon HD 3870 1GB vs Radeon HD 6770

Intro

The Radeon HD 3870 1GB features a GPU core clock speed of 775 MHz, and the 1024 MB of GDDR4 memory runs at 1125 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 320(64x5) SPUs, 16 Texture Address Units, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 6770, which uses a 40 nm design. ATi has clocked the core speed at 900 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM runs at a frequency of 1050 MHz on this model. It features 800 SPUs as well as 40 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 3870 1GB 106 Watts
Radeon HD 6770 108 Watts
Difference: 2 Watts (2%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon HD 3870 1GB should be 7% faster than the Radeon HD 6770 in general, because of its higher data rate. (explain)

Radeon HD 3870 1GB 72000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 6770 67200 MB/sec
Difference: 4800 (7%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6770 is much (approximately 190%) more effective at AF than the Radeon HD 3870 1GB. (explain)

Radeon HD 6770 36000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 3870 1GB 12400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 23600 (190%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 6770 should be a bit (more or less 16%) faster with regards to FSAA than the Radeon HD 3870 1GB, and should be able to handle higher resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

Radeon HD 6770 14400 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 3870 1GB 12400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2000 (16%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface within a second. It's calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.

Cool! I'm really happy the new computer I'll be getting will be able to run Battlefield 3. I would tell you guys about it, but it's an AMAZING deal.. If too many people buy it, it will go way up.. So yeah! Very happy I won't need to build a computer or replace anything in this pre-built one. Merry Christmas everybody!
