Radeon R9 380 4G vs Radeon RX 6500 XT

Intro

The Radeon R9 380 4G features a clock speed of 970 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1425 MHz. It also uses a 256-bit bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It is comprised of 1792 SPUs, 112 TAUs, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all that to the Radeon RX 6500 XT, which comes with a GPU core clock speed of 2200 MHz, and 4096 MB of GDDR6 RAM set to run at 2250 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is made up of 1024 SPUs, 64 TAUs, and 32 ROPs.

Radeon RX 6500 XT 107 Watts
Radeon R9 380 4G 190 Watts
Difference: 83 Watts (78%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon R9 380 4G should be much faster than the Radeon RX 6500 XT overall. (explain)

Radeon R9 380 4G 182400 MB/sec
Radeon RX 6500 XT 147456 MB/sec
Difference: 34944 (24%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6500 XT should be quite a bit (approximately 30%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the Radeon R9 380 4G. (explain)

Radeon RX 6500 XT 140800 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 380 4G 108640 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 32160 (30%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon RX 6500 XT is the winner, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon RX 6500 XT 70400 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 380 4G 31040 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 39360 (127%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card could possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
