Radeon HD 7790 vs Radeon RX 5600

Intro

The Radeon HD 7790 comes with a GPU clock speed of 1000 MHz, and the 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM runs at 1500 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 896 SPUs, 56 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 5600, which uses a 7 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 1375 MHz. The GDDR6 RAM works at a speed of 1500 MHz on this model. It features 2048 SPUs along with 128 TAUs and 64 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 7790 85 Watts
Radeon RX 5600 150 Watts
Difference: 65 Watts (76%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon RX 5600 will be 207% faster than the Radeon HD 7790 overall, because of its higher bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 294912 MB/sec
Radeon HD 7790 96000 MB/sec
Difference: 198912 (207%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5600 should be quite a bit (about 214%) more effective at AF than the Radeon HD 7790. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 176000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 7790 56000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 120000 (214%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 5600 is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 88000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 7790 16000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 72000 (450%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
