GeForce RTX 2080 Ti vs Radeon HD 7850

Intro

The GeForce RTX 2080 Ti has core speeds of 1350 MHz on the GPU, and 1750 MHz on the 11264 MB of GDDR6 RAM. It features 4352 SPUs along with 272 Texture Address Units and 88 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 7850, which uses a 28 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 860 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM works at a speed of 1200 MHz on this particular model. It features 1024 SPUs along with 64 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce RTX 2080 Ti should in theory perform a lot faster than the Radeon HD 7850 in general. (explain)

GeForce RTX 2080 Ti 630784 MB/sec
Radeon HD 7850 153600 MB/sec
Difference: 477184 (311%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 2080 Ti should be much (more or less 567%) faster with regards to AF than the Radeon HD 7850. (explain)

GeForce RTX 2080 Ti 367200 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 7850 55040 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 312160 (567%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti is superior to the Radeon HD 7850, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce RTX 2080 Ti 118800 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 7850 27520 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 91280 (332%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
