GeForce 9400 GT 256MB vs GeForce GTX 1050

Intro

The GeForce 9400 GT 256MB has core clock speeds of 550 MHz on the GPU, and 400 MHz on the 256 MB of GDDR2 RAM. It features 16 SPUs as well as 8 Texture Address Units and 4 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the GeForce GTX 1050, which comes with a clock frequency of 1354 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1750 MHz. It also uses a 128-bit bus, and uses a 14 nm design. It is made up of 640 SPUs, 40 TAUs, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

GeForce GTX 1050 75 Watts
Difference: 25 Watts (50%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce GTX 1050 is 796% quicker than the GeForce 9400 GT 256MB overall, because of its greater data rate. (explain)

GeForce GTX 1050 114688 MB/sec
GeForce 9400 GT 256MB 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 101888 (796%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 1050 should be a lot (more or less 1131%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 9400 GT 256MB. (explain)

GeForce GTX 1050 54160 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 9400 GT 256MB 4400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 49760 (1131%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 1050 will be quite a bit (more or less 1869%) faster with regards to AA than the GeForce 9400 GT 256MB, and also will be able to handle higher resolutions more effectively. (explain)

GeForce GTX 1050 43328 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 9400 GT 256MB 2200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 41128 (1869%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
