GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3 vs Radeon RX 470 4GB

Intro

The GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3 uses a 80 nm design. nVidia has set the core speed at 540 MHz. The GDDR3 memory is set to run at a frequency of 700 MHz on this specific model. It features 32 SPUs as well as 16 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon RX 470 4GB, which has core speeds of 926 MHz on the GPU, and 1650 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 2048 SPUs along with 128 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3 47 Watts
Radeon RX 470 4GB 120 Watts
Difference: 73 Watts (155%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon RX 470 4GB should theoretically be quite a bit superior to the GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3 in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 470 4GB 211200 MB/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3 22400 MB/sec
Difference: 188800 (843%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 470 4GB should be much (about 1272%) more effective at AF than the GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3. (explain)

Radeon RX 470 4GB 118528 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3 8640 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 109888 (1272%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 470 4GB is a better choice, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon RX 470 4GB 29632 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3 4320 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 25312 (586%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in one second. It's worked out by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
