GeForce GTX 560 Ti vs Radeon RX 470 4GB

Intro

The GeForce GTX 560 Ti comes with core clock speeds of 822 MHz on the GPU, and 1002 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 384 SPUs as well as 64 Texture Address Units and 32 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 470 4GB, which features core speeds of 926 MHz on the GPU, and 1650 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 2048 SPUs as well as 128 Texture Address Units and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon RX 470 4GB 120 Watts
GeForce GTX 560 Ti 170 Watts
Difference: 50 Watts (42%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon RX 470 4GB should be 65% quicker than the GeForce GTX 560 Ti overall, because of its higher bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon RX 470 4GB 211200 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 560 Ti 128256 MB/sec
Difference: 82944 (65%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 470 4GB should be much (about 125%) more effective at texture filtering than the GeForce GTX 560 Ti. (explain)

Radeon RX 470 4GB 118528 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 560 Ti 52608 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 65920 (125%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon RX 470 4GB is the winner, though not by far. (explain)

Radeon RX 470 4GB 29632 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 560 Ti 26304 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3328 (13%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface within a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
