GeForce 830M vs Radeon RX 470 4GB

Intro

The GeForce 830M features core clock speeds of 1029 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory. It features 256 SPUs along with 16 Texture Address Units and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 470 4GB, which makes use of a 14 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 926 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM is set to run at a speed of 1650 MHz on this card. It features 2048 SPUs as well as 128 Texture Address Units and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Radeon RX 470 4GB 120 Watts
Difference: 95 Watts (380%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon RX 470 4GB should in theory perform quite a bit faster than the GeForce 830M in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 470 4GB 211200 MB/sec
GeForce 830M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 196800 (1367%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 470 4GB should be much (more or less 620%) better at AF than the GeForce 830M. (explain)

Radeon RX 470 4GB 118528 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 830M 16464 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 102064 (620%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 470 4GB is quite a bit (about 260%) better at full screen anti-aliasing than the GeForce 830M, and will be able to handle higher resolutions better. (explain)

Radeon RX 470 4GB 29632 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 830M 8232 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 21400 (260%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card could possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
