Radeon R9 M290X vs Radeon R9 M365X

Intro

The Radeon R9 M290X comes with core speeds of 850 MHz on the GPU, and 1200 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 1280 SPUs as well as 80 Texture Address Units and 32 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R9 M365X, which features clock speeds of 925 MHz on the GPU, and 1125 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 640 SPUs along with 40 Texture Address Units and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Radeon R9 M290X should be a lot faster than the Radeon R9 M365X in general. (explain)

Radeon R9 M290X 153600 MB/sec
Radeon R9 M365X 72000 MB/sec
Difference: 81600 (113%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M290X will be quite a bit (about 84%) more effective at texture filtering than the Radeon R9 M365X. (explain)

Radeon R9 M290X 68000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M365X 37000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 31000 (84%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon R9 M290X is superior to the Radeon R9 M365X, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon R9 M290X 27200 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M365X 14800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 12400 (84%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card could possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
