GeForce 830M vs Radeon R7 M360

Intro

The GeForce 830M features a GPU core clock speed of 1029 MHz, and the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM is set to run at 900 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is made up of 256 SPUs, 16 Texture Address Units, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Compare that to the Radeon R7 M360, which features clock speeds of 1125 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM. It features 384 SPUs along with 24 TAUs and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon R7 M360 should perform a little bit faster than the GeForce 830M overall. (explain)

Radeon R7 M360 16000 MB/sec
GeForce 830M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 1600 (11%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R7 M360 should be a lot (more or less 64%) better at AF than the GeForce 830M. (explain)

Radeon R7 M360 27000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 830M 16464 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 10536 (64%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R7 M360 will be a little bit (about 9%) faster with regards to AA than the GeForce 830M, and also will be capable of handling higher screen resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

Radeon R7 M360 9000 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 830M 8232 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 768 (9%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
