GeForce 820M vs Radeon HD 5570

Intro

The GeForce 820M has a GPU core clock speed of 719 MHz, and the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory is set to run at 1000 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is made up of 96 Stream Processors, 16 Texture Address Units, and 4 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 5570, which features core speeds of 650 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 512 MB of DDR3 memory. It features 400(80x5) SPUs as well as 20 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 820M 15 Watts
Radeon HD 5570 43 Watts
Difference: 28 Watts (187%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Radeon HD 5570 should be a lot faster than the GeForce 820M overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 5570 28800 MB/sec
GeForce 820M 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 12800 (80%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 5570 will be a little bit (approximately 13%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the GeForce 820M. (explain)

Radeon HD 5570 13000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 820M 11504 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 1496 (13%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 5570 is a lot (more or less 81%) more effective at anti-aliasing than the GeForce 820M, and should be capable of handling higher screen resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

Radeon HD 5570 5200 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 820M 2876 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2324 (81%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface within a second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
