GeForce GT 315 vs Radeon R7 M265

Intro

The GeForce GT 315 comes with a clock speed of 625 MHz and a DDR3 memory speed of 790 MHz. It also features a 128-bit memory bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It is comprised of 48 SPUs, 16 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon R7 M265, which comes with core speeds of 725 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory. It features 384 SPUs along with 24 Texture Address Units and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon R7 M265 will be 27% quicker than the GeForce GT 315 overall, due to its higher data rate. (explain)

Radeon R7 M265 32000 MB/sec
GeForce GT 315 25280 MB/sec
Difference: 6720 (27%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R7 M265 will be much (approximately 74%) better at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GT 315. (explain)

Radeon R7 M265 17400 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 315 10000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 7400 (74%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R7 M265 will be a bit (about 16%) better at FSAA than the GeForce GT 315, and also able to handle higher screen resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

Radeon R7 M265 5800 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 315 5000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 800 (16%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
