GeForce GT 315 vs Radeon R7 M265

Intro

The GeForce GT 315 features a GPU clock speed of 625 MHz, and the 512 MB of DDR3 RAM is set to run at 790 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 48 Stream Processors, 16 Texture Address Units, and 8 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R7 M265, which features clock speeds of 725 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM. It features 384 SPUs as well as 24 TAUs and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon R7 M265 should in theory be much superior to the GeForce GT 315 in general. (explain)

Radeon R7 M265 32000 MB/sec
GeForce GT 315 25280 MB/sec
Difference: 6720 (27%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R7 M265 will be quite a bit (more or less 74%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the GeForce GT 315. (explain)

Radeon R7 M265 17400 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 315 10000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 7400 (74%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R7 M265 will be a little bit (about 16%) faster with regards to AA than the GeForce GT 315, and capable of handling higher screen resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

Radeon R7 M265 5800 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 315 5000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 800 (16%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card could possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
