Radeon R7 250X 2GB vs Radeon R7 M265

Intro

The Radeon R7 250X 2GB features core speeds of 1000 MHz on the GPU, and 1125 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 640 SPUs as well as 40 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R7 M265, which comes with GPU clock speed of 725 MHz, and 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM set to run at 1000 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 384 Stream Processors, 24 Texture Address Units, and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon R7 250X 2GB should in theory perform quite a bit faster than the Radeon R7 M265 overall. (explain)

Radeon R7 250X 2GB 72000 MB/sec
Radeon R7 M265 32000 MB/sec
Difference: 40000 (125%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R7 250X 2GB will be quite a bit (about 130%) faster with regards to AF than the Radeon R7 M265. (explain)

Radeon R7 250X 2GB 40000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R7 M265 17400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 22600 (130%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R7 250X 2GB is a lot (more or less 176%) more effective at FSAA than the Radeon R7 M265, and also able to handle higher resolutions better. (explain)

Radeon R7 250X 2GB 16000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 M265 5800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 10200 (176%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
