GeForce 8400 GS 512MB vs Radeon R5 M230

Intro

The GeForce 8400 GS 512MB has core speeds of 650 MHz on the GPU, and 400 MHz on the 512 MB of DDR2 memory. It features 16 SPUs along with 8 TAUs and 4 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R5 M230, which features GPU core speed of 780 MHz, and 2048 MB of DDR3 memory set to run at 1000 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also features 320 SPUs, 20 TAUs, and 4 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon R5 M230 should be a lot faster than the GeForce 8400 GS 512MB overall. (explain)

Radeon R5 M230 16000 MB/sec
GeForce 8400 GS 512MB 6400 MB/sec
Difference: 9600 (150%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R5 M230 should be a lot (about 200%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 8400 GS 512MB. (explain)

Radeon R5 M230 15600 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8400 GS 512MB 5200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 10400 (200%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R5 M230 should be just a bit (about 20%) better at FSAA than the GeForce 8400 GS 512MB, and also should be able to handle higher resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

Radeon R5 M230 3120 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8400 GS 512MB 2600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 520 (20%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
