GeForce 940M vs GeForce GT 315

Intro

The GeForce 940M has clock speeds of 1072 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM. It features 384 SPUs along with 24 TAUs and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all of that to the GeForce GT 315, which uses a 40 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core frequency at 625 MHz. The DDR3 memory is set to run at a speed of 790 MHz on this particular card. It features 48 SPUs along with 16 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce GT 315, in theory, should be quite a bit faster than the GeForce 940M overall. (explain)

GeForce GT 315 25280 MB/sec
GeForce 940M 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 9280 (58%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 940M is much (about 157%) more effective at texture filtering than the GeForce GT 315. (explain)

GeForce 940M 25728 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 315 10000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 15728 (157%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the GeForce 940M is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

GeForce 940M 8576 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 315 5000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3576 (72%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
