GeForce 8800 GS vs GeForce 920M

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GS makes use of a 65 nm design. nVidia has set the core speed at 550 MHz. The GDDR3 memory runs at a frequency of 800 MHz on this specific card. It features 96 SPUs as well as 48 Texture Address Units and 12 ROPs.

Compare that to the GeForce 920M, which comes with GPU clock speed of 954 MHz, and 2048 MB of DDR3 memory running at 900 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is made up of 384 SPUs, 32 Texture Address Units, and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the GeForce 8800 GS should theoretically be quite a bit superior to the GeForce 920M in general. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GS 38400 MB/sec
GeForce 920M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 24000 (167%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 920M should be a small bit (more or less 16%) better at texture filtering than the GeForce 8800 GS. (explain)

GeForce 920M 30528 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8800 GS 26400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 4128 (16%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce 920M is a better choice, but not by far. (explain)

GeForce 920M 7632 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8800 GS 6600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 1032 (16%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card can possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
