GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 vs Radeon HD 5570

Intro

The GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 uses a 40 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core frequency at 550 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM runs at a frequency of 850 MHz on this card. It features 96 SPUs as well as 32 Texture Address Units and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 5570, which has core speeds of 650 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 512 MB of DDR3 memory. It features 400(80x5) SPUs as well as 20 Texture Address Units and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 5570 43 Watts
GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 70 Watts
Difference: 27 Watts (63%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 is 89% quicker than the Radeon HD 5570 in general, due to its greater bandwidth. (explain)

GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 54400 MB/sec
Radeon HD 5570 28800 MB/sec
Difference: 25600 (89%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 should be a lot (approximately 35%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 5570. (explain)

GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 17600 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5570 13000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 4600 (35%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 5570 will be a little bit (approximately 18%) faster with regards to FSAA than the GeForce GT 240 GDDR5, and able to handle higher resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

Radeon HD 5570 5200 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 4400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 800 (18%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
