GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 1GB vs GeForce GTX 750

Intro

The GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 1GB has a core clock speed of 550 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 850 MHz. It also makes use of a 128-bit memory bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It is made up of 96 SPUs, 32 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the GeForce GTX 750, which comes with a GPU core clock speed of 1020 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory running at 1250 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 512 SPUs, 32 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 750 55 Watts
GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 1GB 70 Watts
Difference: 15 Watts (27%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce GTX 750 should be 47% faster than the GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 1GB overall, because of its higher bandwidth. (explain)

GeForce GTX 750 80000 MB/sec
GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 1GB 54400 MB/sec
Difference: 25600 (47%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 750 will be quite a bit (more or less 85%) better at AF than the GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 1GB. (explain)

GeForce GTX 750 32640 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 1GB 17600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 15040 (85%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 750 is a better choice, by far. (explain)

GeForce GTX 750 16320 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 1GB 4400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 11920 (271%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card can possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
