GeForce 8800 GS vs GeForce GTX 650

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GS comes with core speeds of 550 MHz on the GPU, and 800 MHz on the 384 MB of GDDR3 memory. It features 96 SPUs as well as 48 Texture Address Units and 12 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the GeForce GTX 650, which comes with clock speeds of 1058 MHz on the GPU, and 1250 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 384 SPUs as well as 32 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 650 64 Watts
GeForce 8800 GS 105 Watts
Difference: 41 Watts (64%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the GeForce GTX 650 should theoretically be quite a bit superior to the GeForce 8800 GS overall. (explain)

GeForce GTX 650 80000 MB/sec
GeForce 8800 GS 38400 MB/sec
Difference: 41600 (108%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 650 is quite a bit (approximately 28%) better at AF than the GeForce 8800 GS. (explain)

GeForce GTX 650 33856 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8800 GS 26400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 7456 (28%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 650 will be a lot (about 156%) more effective at full screen anti-aliasing than the GeForce 8800 GS, and also able to handle higher resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

GeForce GTX 650 16928 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8800 GS 6600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 10328 (156%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card can possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
