GeForce RTX 4070 Ti vs Radeon RX 6800 XT

Intro

The GeForce RTX 4070 Ti has core speeds of 2310 MHz on the GPU, and 1313 MHz on the 12288 MB of GDDR6X RAM. It features 7680 SPUs as well as 240 TAUs and 80 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 6800 XT, which uses a 7 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 1825 MHz. The GDDR6 memory runs at a speed of 2000 MHz on this specific card. It features 4608 SPUs as well as 288 Texture Address Units and 128 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce RTX 4070 Ti 285 Watts
Radeon RX 6800 XT 300 Watts
Difference: 15 Watts (5%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon RX 6800 XT should in theory be a small bit better than the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 XT 524288 MB/sec
GeForce RTX 4070 Ti 516096 MB/sec
Difference: 8192 (2%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 4070 Ti should be a small bit (about 5%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon RX 6800 XT. (explain)

GeForce RTX 4070 Ti 554400 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 6800 XT 525600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 28800 (5%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 6800 XT is a better choice, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 XT 233600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce RTX 4070 Ti 184800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 48800 (26%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface within a second. It's calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
