GeForce RTX 2060 vs GeForce RTX 3060

Intro

The GeForce RTX 2060 uses a 12 nm design. nVidia has set the core speed at 1365 MHz. The GDDR6 RAM works at a frequency of 1750 MHz on this model. It features 1920 SPUs along with 120 Texture Address Units and 48 ROPs.

Compare all that to the GeForce RTX 3060, which features GPU clock speed of 1320 MHz, and (Unknown) MB of GDDR6 memory set to run at 1875 MHz through a 192-bit bus. It also is comprised of 3584 SPUs, 112 Texture Address Units, and 48 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce RTX 2060 160 Watts
GeForce RTX 3060 170 Watts
Difference: 10 Watts (6%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce RTX 3060 should perform a little bit faster than the GeForce RTX 2060 in general. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3060 368640 MB/sec
GeForce RTX 2060 344064 MB/sec
Difference: 24576 (7%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 2060 should be a bit (about 11%) faster with regards to AF than the GeForce RTX 3060. (explain)

GeForce RTX 2060 163800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce RTX 3060 147840 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 15960 (11%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the GeForce RTX 2060 is superior to the GeForce RTX 3060, but only just. (explain)

GeForce RTX 2060 65520 Mpixels/sec
GeForce RTX 3060 63360 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2160 (3%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip could possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
