GeForce GTX 965M vs Radeon HD 4730

Intro

The GeForce GTX 965M makes use of a 28 nm design. nVidia has set the core frequency at 944 MHz. The GDDR5 memory works at a speed of 1000 MHz on this card. It features 1024 SPUs along with 64 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon HD 4730, which uses a 55 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 700 MHz. The GDDR5 memory is set to run at a speed of 900 MHz on this specific card. It features 640(128x5) SPUs along with 32 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

GeForce GTX 965M 60 Watts
Radeon HD 4730 140 Watts
Difference: 80 Watts (133%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce GTX 965M should perform just a bit faster than the Radeon HD 4730 in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 64000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 4730 57600 MB/sec
Difference: 6400 (11%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 965M will be quite a bit (approximately 170%) better at AF than the Radeon HD 4730. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 60416 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 4730 22400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 38016 (170%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 965M is superior to the Radeon HD 4730, by far. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 30208 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 4730 5600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 24608 (439%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
