GeForce GTX 965M vs Radeon HD 4730

Intro

The GeForce GTX 965M uses a 28 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 944 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM runs at a speed of 1000 MHz on this particular card. It features 1024 SPUs as well as 64 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 4730, which makes use of a 55 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 700 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM is set to run at a frequency of 900 MHz on this card. It features 640(128x5) SPUs as well as 32 Texture Address Units and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

GeForce GTX 965M 60 Watts
Radeon HD 4730 140 Watts
Difference: 80 Watts (133%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce GTX 965M should perform just a bit faster than the Radeon HD 4730 in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 64000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 4730 57600 MB/sec
Difference: 6400 (11%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 965M is a lot (more or less 170%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 4730. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 60416 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 4730 22400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 38016 (170%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 965M is superior to the Radeon HD 4730, by far. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 30208 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 4730 5600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 24608 (439%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
