GeForce GTS 450 vs Radeon HD 6750

Intro

The GeForce GTS 450 makes use of a 40 nm design. nVidia has set the core frequency at 783 MHz. The GDDR5 memory runs at a speed of 902 MHz on this specific card. It features 192 SPUs as well as 32 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon HD 6750, which comes with a clock speed of 725 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1000 MHz. It also features a 128-bit bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It is comprised of 720 SPUs, 36 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 6750 86 Watts
GeForce GTS 450 106 Watts
Difference: 20 Watts (23%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon HD 6750 should theoretically be a small bit better than the GeForce GTS 450 overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 6750 64000 MB/sec
GeForce GTS 450 57728 MB/sec
Difference: 6272 (11%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6750 should be a bit (approximately 4%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GTS 450. (explain)

Radeon HD 6750 26100 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTS 450 25056 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 1044 (4%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTS 450 will be a small bit (more or less 8%) faster with regards to AA than the Radeon HD 6750, and also should be capable of handling higher screen resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

GeForce GTS 450 12528 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6750 11600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 928 (8%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in one second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
