Radeon HD 6750 1GB vs Radeon HD 6950

Intro

The Radeon HD 6750 1GB has a GPU clock speed of 725 MHz, and the 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM runs at 1000 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 720 Stream Processors, 36 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 6950, which has a clock frequency of 800 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1250 MHz. It also uses a 256-bit bus, and makes use of a 40 nm design. It features 1408 SPUs, 88 TAUs, and 32 ROPs.

Radeon HD 6750 1GB 86 Watts
Radeon HD 6950 200 Watts
Difference: 114 Watts (133%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon HD 6950 should in theory be a lot better than the Radeon HD 6750 1GB overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 160000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 6750 1GB 64000 MB/sec
Difference: 96000 (150%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6950 is a lot (about 170%) more effective at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 6750 1GB. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 70400 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6750 1GB 26100 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 44300 (170%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon HD 6950 is the winner, by far. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 25600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6750 1GB 11600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 14000 (121%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
