Radeon RX 5500 XT vs Radeon RX 7900 XT

Intro

The Radeon RX 5500 XT has a GPU core speed of 1717 MHz, and the 8192 MB of GDDR6 RAM is set to run at 1750 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 1408 Stream Processors, 88 TAUs, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 7900 XT, which comes with a clock speed of 1500 MHz and a GDDR6 memory frequency of 2500 MHz. It also uses a 320-bit bus, and uses a 5 nm design. It is comprised of 5376 SPUs, 336 Texture Address Units, and 192 Raster Operation Units.

Performance-wise, the Radeon RX 7900 XT should theoretically be quite a bit better than the Radeon RX 5500 XT in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XT 819200 MB/sec
Radeon RX 5500 XT 229376 MB/sec
Difference: 589824 (257%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 7900 XT should be much (more or less 234%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon RX 5500 XT. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XT 504000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 5500 XT 151096 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 352904 (234%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 7900 XT is superior to the Radeon RX 5500 XT, by far. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XT 288000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon RX 5500 XT 54944 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 233056 (424%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in one second. The number is worked out by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
