Radeon RX 6700 XT vs Radeon RX 7900 XT

Intro

The Radeon RX 6700 XT uses a 7 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 2321 MHz. The GDDR6 memory runs at a speed of 2000 MHz on this specific model. It features 2560 SPUs as well as 160 Texture Address Units and 64 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 7900 XT, which uses a 5 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 1500 MHz. The GDDR6 RAM works at a frequency of 2500 MHz on this particular card. It features 5376 SPUs along with 336 TAUs and 192 Rasterization Operator Units.

Radeon RX 6700 XT 230 Watts
Radeon RX 7900 XT 300 Watts
Difference: 70 Watts (30%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon RX 7900 XT should perform much faster than the Radeon RX 6700 XT overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XT 819200 MB/sec
Radeon RX 6700 XT 393216 MB/sec
Difference: 425984 (108%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 7900 XT should be a lot (more or less 36%) more effective at texture filtering than the Radeon RX 6700 XT. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XT 504000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 6700 XT 371360 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 132640 (36%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 7900 XT is superior to the Radeon RX 6700 XT, by far. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XT 288000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon RX 6700 XT 148544 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 139456 (94%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
