GeForce RTX 3070 vs GeForce RTX 4080

Intro

The GeForce RTX 3070 features a GPU core speed of 1500 MHz, and the 8192 MB of GDDR6 memory runs at 1750 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 5888 SPUs, 184 TAUs, and 96 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the GeForce RTX 4080, which has a GPU core clock speed of 2205 MHz, and 16384 MB of GDDR6X RAM set to run at 1400 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 9728 SPUs, 304 Texture Address Units, and 112 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce RTX 3070 220 Watts
GeForce RTX 4080 320 Watts
Difference: 100 Watts (45%)

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce RTX 4080 should in theory be a little bit faster than the GeForce RTX 3070 in general. (explain)

GeForce RTX 4080 734003 MB/sec
GeForce RTX 3070 (Unknown) MB/sec
Difference: 734003 (-100%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 4080 is much (about 143%) better at texture filtering than the GeForce RTX 3070. (explain)

GeForce RTX 4080 670320 Mtexels/sec
GeForce RTX 3070 276000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 394320 (143%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce RTX 4080 is much (about 72%) more effective at anti-aliasing than the GeForce RTX 3070, and also should be able to handle higher resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

GeForce RTX 4080 246960 Mpixels/sec
GeForce RTX 3070 144000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 102960 (72%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface within a second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card could possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
