GeForce 940M vs Radeon RX 6650 XT

Intro

The GeForce 940M features clock speeds of 1072 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory. It features 384 SPUs along with 24 TAUs and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 6650 XT, which features a core clock speed of 2055 MHz and a GDDR6 memory frequency of 2190 MHz. It also makes use of a 128-bit memory bus, and uses a 7 nm design. It is made up of 2048 SPUs, 128 Texture Address Units, and 64 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon RX 6650 XT should perform much faster than the GeForce 940M overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 6650 XT 287072 MB/sec
GeForce 940M 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 271072 (1694%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6650 XT will be a lot (about 922%) better at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 940M. (explain)

Radeon RX 6650 XT 263040 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 940M 25728 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 237312 (922%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 6650 XT should be a lot (approximately 1434%) better at FSAA than the GeForce 940M, and also capable of handling higher screen resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

Radeon RX 6650 XT 131520 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 940M 8576 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 122944 (1434%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in one second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card can possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
