GeForce GTX 965M vs GeForce RTX 3060

Intro

The GeForce GTX 965M has core speeds of 944 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 1024 SPUs as well as 64 Texture Address Units and 32 ROPs.

Compare all that to the GeForce RTX 3060, which features GPU core speed of 1320 MHz, and (Unknown) MB of GDDR6 memory set to run at 1875 MHz through a 192-bit bus. It also is comprised of 3584 Stream Processors, 112 Texture Address Units, and 48 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 965M 60 Watts
GeForce RTX 3060 170 Watts
Difference: 110 Watts (183%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the GeForce RTX 3060 should perform quite a bit faster than the GeForce GTX 965M overall. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3060 368640 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 965M 64000 MB/sec
Difference: 304640 (476%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 3060 should be much (about 145%) better at texture filtering than the GeForce GTX 965M. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3060 147840 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 965M 60416 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 87424 (145%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce RTX 3060 is superior to the GeForce GTX 965M, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3060 63360 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 965M 30208 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 33152 (110%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in one second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
