Radeon HD 3470 256MB vs Radeon RX 6900 XT

Intro

The Radeon HD 3470 256MB features a GPU core speed of 800 MHz, and the 256 MB of DDR2 RAM is set to run at 950 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 40(8x5) SPUs, 4 Texture Address Units, and 4 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 6900 XT, which has GPU core speed of 1825 MHz, and 16384 MB of GDDR6 memory set to run at 2000 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 5120 Stream Processors, 320 Texture Address Units, and 128 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon RX 6900 XT should theoretically perform a lot faster than the Radeon HD 3470 256MB overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 6900 XT 524288 MB/sec
Radeon HD 3470 256MB 30400 MB/sec
Difference: 493888 (1625%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6900 XT will be quite a bit (about 18150%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 3470 256MB. (explain)

Radeon RX 6900 XT 584000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 3470 256MB 3200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 580800 (18150%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 6900 XT will be much (approximately 7200%) better at FSAA than the Radeon HD 3470 256MB, and will be capable of handling higher screen resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

Radeon RX 6900 XT 233600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 3470 256MB 3200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 230400 (7200%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in one second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
