Radeon R9 380X vs Radeon RX 6900 XT

Intro

The Radeon R9 380X has core clock speeds of 970 MHz on the GPU, and 1425 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 2048 SPUs along with 128 Texture Address Units and 32 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 6900 XT, which features a GPU core clock speed of 1825 MHz, and 16384 MB of GDDR6 RAM set to run at 2000 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 5120 Stream Processors, 320 TAUs, and 128 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon R9 380X 190 Watts
Radeon RX 6900 XT 300 Watts
Difference: 110 Watts (58%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon RX 6900 XT should in theory be much superior to the Radeon R9 380X in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 6900 XT 524288 MB/sec
Radeon R9 380X 182400 MB/sec
Difference: 341888 (187%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6900 XT should be quite a bit (about 370%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon R9 380X. (explain)

Radeon RX 6900 XT 584000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 380X 124160 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 459840 (370%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 6900 XT is a better choice, by far. (explain)

Radeon RX 6900 XT 233600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 380X 31040 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 202560 (653%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in a second. It's calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card can possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
