Radeon RX 580 vs Radeon RX 6800 XT

Intro

The Radeon RX 580 uses a 14 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 1257 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM is set to run at a frequency of 2000 MHz on this specific model. It features 2304 SPUs along with 144 Texture Address Units and 32 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon RX 6800 XT, which comes with core speeds of 1825 MHz on the GPU, and 2000 MHz on the 16384 MB of GDDR6 RAM. It features 4608 SPUs along with 288 TAUs and 128 Rasterization Operator Units.

Radeon RX 6800 XT 300 Watts
Difference: 115 Watts (62%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon RX 6800 XT should perform a lot faster than the Radeon RX 580 in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 XT 524288 MB/sec
Radeon RX 580 262144 MB/sec
Difference: 262144 (100%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6800 XT will be a lot (approximately 190%) more effective at AF than the Radeon RX 580. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 XT 525600 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 580 181008 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 344592 (190%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 6800 XT is superior to the Radeon RX 580, by far. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 XT 233600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon RX 580 40224 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 193376 (481%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
