GeForce GTX 980 Ti vs GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER

Intro

The GeForce GTX 980 Ti has a GPU core speed of 1000 MHz, and the 6144 MB of GDDR5 RAM is set to run at 1750 MHz through a 384-bit bus. It also is made up of 2816 Stream Processors, 176 Texture Address Units, and 96 ROPs.

Compare all that to the GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER, which comes with core clock speeds of 1650 MHz on the GPU, and 1937 MHz on the 8192 MB of GDDR6 memory. It features 3072 SPUs along with 192 Texture Address Units and 64 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Both cards have the same power consumption.

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER should be 51% faster than the GeForce GTX 980 Ti overall, due to its higher bandwidth. (explain)

GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER 507904 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 980 Ti 336000 MB/sec
Difference: 171904 (51%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER will be quite a bit (more or less 80%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the GeForce GTX 980 Ti. (explain)

GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER 316800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 980 Ti 176000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 140800 (80%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER is just a bit (more or less 10%) faster with regards to anti-aliasing than the GeForce GTX 980 Ti, and also will be capable of handling higher resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER 105600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 980 Ti 96000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 9600 (10%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
