Radeon RX 550 vs Radeon RX 5500 XT

Intro

The Radeon RX 550 features a GPU core speed of 1100 MHz, and the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory runs at 1750 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 512 Stream Processors, 32 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 5500 XT, which has core speeds of 1717 MHz on the GPU, and 1750 MHz on the 8192 MB of GDDR6 RAM. It features 1408 SPUs along with 88 Texture Address Units and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Radeon RX 5500 XT 130 Watts
Difference: 80 Watts (160%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon RX 5500 XT should theoretically be much better than the Radeon RX 550 overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 5500 XT 229376 MB/sec
Radeon RX 550 114688 MB/sec
Difference: 114688 (100%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5500 XT will be quite a bit (approximately 329%) more effective at AF than the Radeon RX 550. (explain)

Radeon RX 5500 XT 151096 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 550 35200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 115896 (329%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 5500 XT will be a lot (about 212%) faster with regards to anti-aliasing than the Radeon RX 550, and also capable of handling higher resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

Radeon RX 5500 XT 54944 Mpixels/sec
Radeon RX 550 17600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 37344 (212%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface within a second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
