Radeon R5 M230 vs Radeon RX 5600

Intro

The Radeon R5 M230 comes with a core clock frequency of 780 MHz and a DDR3 memory frequency of 1000 MHz. It also uses a 64-bit memory bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It is made up of 320 SPUs, 20 Texture Address Units, and 4 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon RX 5600, which makes use of a 7 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 1375 MHz. The GDDR6 memory works at a speed of 1500 MHz on this specific model. It features 2048 SPUs along with 128 TAUs and 64 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon RX 5600 should in theory be quite a bit better than the Radeon R5 M230 overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 294912 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M230 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 278912 (1743%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5600 is quite a bit (more or less 1028%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the Radeon R5 M230. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 176000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M230 15600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 160400 (1028%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 5600 is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 88000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M230 3120 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 84880 (2721%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
